Introduction to FUT Hair Transplant Technique

FUT surgery or Follicular Unit Transplantation, is an old technique of hair harvesting. It is a conventional surgical procedure called " strip " which has the main advantage of harvesting a large number of grafts in a minimum of time.

In FUT, the donor area can only be the back of the skull: a strip 10 to 20 cm wide by 1 to 2.5 cm wide is taken from there. It is then carefully cut under a microscope into follicular units (FU).

This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia with conventional surgical equipment. Its main drawback is the linear scar left on the scalp: made by trichophytic suture, it is nevertheless thin and generally barely or not at all visible.

In order to avoid excessive traction during suturing, it is best to have the most flexible scalp possible. Also, daily scalp massages are recommended approximately 1 month before the procedure. These are simple relaxation techniques that you can perform yourself at home.

Prior shaving of the donor area and/or recipient area is not necessary but may be recommended to facilitate graft collection and implantation.

What are the consequences of a FUT transplant surgery?

At the end of the procedure, the operating instructions are carefully recalled by our hair implant specialist. A bandage can be applied to the donor area.

The main post-operative consequences consist of:

facial edema which may be visible (within 24 to 48 hours) then resolves within a few days
small scabs in the donor and recipient areas (disappear within 7 to 10 days)
mild to moderate redness in the implanted area, which then returns to normal within a few weeks
a phenomenon of “shedding” (falling of the implanted hair shaft), classic in the first trimester. Then, the grafts grow and become denser over the months.

Can you return to sport quickly after a FUT transplant?

The post-operative effects must be considered (scar care, dysesthesia in the donor area, redness, scabs, edema), allowing a resumption of physical activity within at least 1 month.
