Overview: What is Finasteride?

Finasteride is an inhibitor of the 5-alpha reductase type 2 enzyme (present in the hair follicles of the scalp). It thus blocks the peripheral transformation of testosterone into another androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the main cause of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness). Finasteride Prescription

For men: Finasteride is dosed at 1 mg per day (oral intake) for the indication of male androgenetic alopecia. It is important not to stop this treatment without medical advice. For women: It cannot be prescribed to women of childbearing age due to a significant risk to a possible fetus (teratogenic, impaired virilization). For postmenopausal women suffering from androgenetic alopecia, no benefit has been reported with finasteride. Note: The combination of minoxidil 5% and finasteride potentiates their effectiveness against hair loss. In all cases, treatment and follow-up are always personalized.

Side effects and contraindications

Side effects are rare (<1 to 2%) but should be considered (breast discomfort sometimes associated with an increase in volume, change in texture and/or volume of sperm, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, decreased morale).
